Summer 2025 - Artificial Intelligence for Business Intelligence Research Intern(6539)
Overview of Role
The Artificial Intelligence for Business Intelligence Research (AI4BIR) Center at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in San Jose, California is seeking interns to work with groups of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Scientists and AI engineers on various AI4BI projects. AI4BIR is one of 3-4 divisions within the global AI4BI Center (100+ FTEs) in TSMC’s Corporate Planning Organization (CPO) in Hsinchu, Taiwan. AI4BIR comprises of 10-15 AI Research Scientists and AI engineers and specifically aims to develop advanced AI-enabled analytics research capabilities based on open-source packages to facilitate intelligence analysis to support TSMC’s business decision making processes. Selected examples include supply chain intelligence, HR management (recruitment, development, retention), internal chatbot resources, competitor analysis, and production planning (e.g., wafer start strategies). AI4BIR’s AI Research Scientists and engineers are responsible for implementing the technical AI procedures (e.g., data collection, model development, quantitative evaluations, system integration) based the guidance of Business Intelligence (BI) experts, who provide input about key problems of interest, data, and evaluations. AI4BIR’s primary focus (80%) is to develop AI-enabled systems for production use within TSMC. About 20% of the focus is on producing advanced research for potential publication at leading AI and machine learning conferences and journals.
Responsibilities
Interns in AI4BIR will be based in San Jose, California. The TSMC office in San Jose observes a hybrid working model (four days in person, Friday as a remote work day). The individual in this role is expected to spend the bulk of their time in San Jose working with AI4BIR. A one-month trip to TSMC’s headquarters in Hsinchu will be necessary for interns to engage in team building, training, and project coordination. The specific responsibilities the intern will undertake include:
- Model Development: Create and manage advanced machine learning, deep learning, LLM, foundation models, time-series modelling, and/or reinforcement learning algorithms to develop data-driven solutions for complex business problems.
- Business Analysis: Analyze and interpret complicated data sets to provide actionable insights that aid in enhancing decision-making processes for business stakeholders.
- Team Composition and Interaction: Work with cross-functional and international teams to identify and prioritize data-driven opportunities, including the development and deployment of predictive models to drive business outcomes. The intern will also work with teams with senior data scientists, other junior data scientists, and data engineers to develop and uphold efficient procedures for gathering, retaining, and scrutinizing data.
- Communication: Communicate insights and recommendations via internal reports to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications
The intern is expected to have several sets of qualifications:
- Education: Ongoing Ph.D. or MS in computer science, electrical engineering, information systems, information science, statistics, or related AI or related machine learning fields.
- AI-enabled Analytics Knowledge: Common AI-enabled analytics techniques of high relevance to AI4BI include machine learning, deep learning, large language models, reinforcement learning, optimization, network science, and time-series modelling. The candidate should possess knowledge in one or more of these areas.
- Hands-on Systems Development Experiences: Knowledge about deploying models into user interface tools for dashboarding (e.g., PowerBI), Python frameworks for rapid prototyping and interaction (e.g., Streamlit, Dash), and/or JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React) is a plus, but not a must.
- Linguistic Capabilities and Cross-Cultural Competency: Given that the position is based in the US, the candidate must possess excellent English communication skills. Given the global nature of this position, the candidate should ideally be bilingual in Mandarin and English. Awareness, sensitivity, and adaptability to cultural backgrounds and international work environments (Taiwan and US) and practices is also a must.
- Publications: Publications in leading AI conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, KDD) and/or journals (e.g., IEEE TKDE, ACM TOIS) is a big plus.
- Overseas Training Requirement: Willingness and ability to travel to TSMC's headquarters in Hsinchu, Taiwan, for a one-month trip to engage in team building, training, and project coordination.
